“Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend”— Do you know this old song? It was sung by Marilyn Monroe in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes in the 1950s and imitated by Madonna in her “Material Girl” video in the 1980s.
The suit of Pentacles in the Tarot corresponds to the suit of Diamonds in a standard deck of cards, and when the Queen of Pentacles appears, she may well be your best friend, especially if you’re seeking prosperity, such as a raise at work, an inheritance, or a profit or financial windfall.
Pentacles refer to life’s material side: business, property, money, debt, work and so on. When in a positive position in a reading, almost any Pentacles card heralds prosperity and/or your ability to achieve it.
Queens in the Tarot deck stand for the feminine side of life, of course, and they tend to represent the essence of their suit. So the Queen of Pentacles can empower you to solve your financial problems, manage your money more wisely, get out of debt, stop being miserly, and manifest abundance.
In the Old Path Tarot Deck the Queen of Pentacles is dressed richly in green (the colour of abundance and money), and she leans on an enormous coin.
In the traditional Rider Waite deck, this Queen rules from an ornate throne in a gorgeous rose garden. Holding a huge golden coin, she’s flanked by a rabbit, symbol of fertility, resting in the lower corner of the card.
The faces of both Queens bear serene expressions. Each trusts her own abilities. Each is at peace with the material world.
The Queen of Pentacles wants you to trust your abilities and be at peace, too: you have the power to make the best decisions, to choose competent financial advisors, and to avoid con men and charlatans. Be down-to-earth and sensible. Don’t try to keep up with the Joneses, don’t worry about what others might think, and don’t take on debts you can’t afford. You can succeed financially, says the Queen, whether in balancing your budget, making sensible purchases, or being recognised and rewarded at work.
If you’re experiencing financial problems, this Queen cautions you to calm down and stop panicking. By letting yourself becoming upset or overwhelmed, she says, you might be making things worse. So do your best to get control of your finances. Be willing to work hard. Be practical and sensible. Then relax and put your faith in the abundance of the universe – and trust in the Queen of Pentacles.

My American friend Kathryn is scared of the doctor! It’s strange, as she comes from a family of medics, but nevertheless, she doesn’t like visiting the surgery. In the town where she lives, doctors are proactive in encouraging patients to get tested for various things, such as diabetes and kidney function. So, the medical receptionist called Kathryn to book a blood test, but Kathryn didn’t want to go and politely refused. The receptionist called again. And again. After several calls, Kathryn still downright refused to go. She’s healthy, feels great and absolutely did not want a needle poked in her arm without specific good reason.
However, the receptionist was – without exaggeration – a bully, who wouldn’t stop calling – she even called Kathryn’s best friend to tell her to send Kathryn to the surgery! That wouldn’t be allowed in England as it would be seen as a breach of patient confidentiality.
Anyway, Kathryn got really upset with the receptionist, who was continuing to call and scaremonger her into having blood taken. Eventually started to panic, Kathryn drew herself a Tarot card – and was horrified to pull the Three of Swords. This card can be particularly upsetting as its imagery – especially in the Rider Waite deck, is of a floating heart being pierced by three sharp swords. It signifies a breakup and loss, usually accompanied by intense sadness, emotional suffering and great disappointment.
Kathryn viewed the card as sign of doom and gloom, heartbreak on the horizon and reason to be worried. But actually, the image couldn’t be more appropriate for a simple blood test! A heart – the supplier of blood, and three sharp stabbing implements!! (Needles in arms…) It didn’t automatically mean heartbreak.
Still, whatever the pictoral and emotional connotation of the card, the fact that it appeared alongside a dispute over a blood test meant there would be no harm in getting the test to make sure there were no physical problems with her heart.
And, thankfully, the bottom line here is that Kathryn is absolutely fine. She had the test and now she can relax in the knowledge that everything is functioning as it should. But here’s what’s interesting…
The bullying receptionist got fired!! The doctor had overheard her being nasty to Kathryn on the phone, and it turned out that she had a history of being overly forceful to the point of upsetting patients. Feedback to the surgery frequently stated that the medical care was great but the admin woman was offensive.
So Kathryn’s negative and distressing relationship with the receptionist came to an abrupt end as the woman lost her job due to her unacceptable behaviour. The Tarot card’s message was fulfilled twofold.

The following advice comes from my friend Kathryn, who lives in mystical Sedona where the mountains glow blood red and the people have an extra touch of ESP.
Whether it’s a hen do, birthday party or a corporate event, Tarot adds colour, fun and excitement to any gathering.
Here’s how to arrange the perfect Tarot event…
The Space
Decide whether you want the Tarot reader to be the focal point or an addition to the main event.
If she’s the focal point, put her in a highly-visible and easily accessible spot. If she’s secondary to a larger theme (such as at a wedding reception or baby shower), choose a quiet corner or a separate room.
Your Tarot reader may have her own decorations for the space, or you may wish to provide a décor that compliments the design of the venue and that harmonises with your party’s theme.
Make sure there’s a small table and two comfortable chairs. Add a velvet table covering, perhaps some colourful scarves, plus a candle for atmosphere – and you’ve created the perfect “sacred space.”
Party Favours
It’s a lovely idea to complement the readings with party favours. These might include crystals, figurines, books, jewellery, essential-oil fragrances or good luck charms – the sky’s the limit! You may wish to create a special “swag bag” or “goodie pack” containing these mystical objects as a take-away for each guest.
The Reader
Of course, the essential component of the event is your Tarot reader. Find someone who’s experienced, who has the look and attitude you want, and who fits within your budget. Specify how long you want each reading to last – although this may vary depending on how many people are at your event, as a good corporate or party Tarot reader won’t want any of your guests to leave disappointed. And if you want her to wear a distinct costume, make that – and any other special requirements – clear from the outset.
A Tarot reader is a great conversation starter and icebreaker, and you’ll find that once the event begins, even non-believers will excitedly exchange information about their personal readings!

New Year’s Day has come and gone – or has it?
The lunar-based Chinese New Year begins on February 5, and it’s another chance to bring yourself good luck throughout 2019.
This will be the Year of the Pig, and the pig is an auspicious sign in the Chinese zodiac – it symbolizes wealth!
Chinese people and others in Asia have many new year’s traditions to ensure good luck. Here are a few of them:
- Clean the House in Advance. Tidy up early so you won’t have to clean during the first days of the new year: sweeping and washing early in the year could sweep away and wash away your good luck.

- Visit Your Hairdresser. Chinese people believe in getting a haircut before the new year begins, so why not splurge and get a new style, plus all-over colour, or highlights? Then wait at least a month before getting another trim.

- Go Shopping! If you’re a lady who loves shoes, these words will be music to your ears: the Chinese believe it’s lucky to buy new footwear before the year begins. Wear those trainers or Louboutins after a bath on Chinese New Year’s Eve.

- Deck the Halls with Flowers. For extra good fortune in 2019, add one of these lucky plants to your home: a tangerine tree (in Cantonese, the word “tangerine” sounds like the word for “luck”); pussy willows (the silver of the plant attracts money); cherry blossom branches (especially if you’re hoping for love); or daffodils (the golden colour pulls in wealth).

- Have a Feast. On New Year’s Day, feast upon chicken and fish because, in Cantonese, “chicken” sounds like “luck” and fish sounds like “well off.” Serve them whole, but don’t pick them clean; the leftovers mean you’ll have leftover money at the end of the year.
