The Curious History of Halloween (and Why It’s the Perfect Time for a Tarot Reading)

Before Halloween became about costumes, candy and plastic pumpkins, it was a night filled with mystery, bonfires and whispered beliefs about spirits walking among us.

The festival began over 2,000 years ago as Samhain (pronounced Sow-in), a Celtic celebration marking the end of harvest and the start of winter — “the darker half of the year.” People believed the boundary between the living and spirit worlds grew thin, allowing ancestors (and the odd mischievous ghost) to visit.

To protect themselves, villagers lit huge fires, wore disguises, and placed offerings outside their homes. Carved turnips (yes, turnips, not pumpkins!) were used as lanterns to scare away wandering souls — a tradition that later crossed the Atlantic and turned into the glowing jack-o’-lanterns we know today.

It was also a time for divination. Young people would peel apples to reveal the initials of future lovers, toss nuts into fires to test relationships, or use mirrors to glimpse what lay ahead. In short, Halloween has always been about seeking insight when the world turns darker and quieter.

So as October draws to a close and the nights stretch longer, it’s no wonder tarot readings feel especially powerful. After all, this is the season when intuition awakens, the veil thins, and the universe seems just a little more talkative.
