A figure sits tranquilly under a tree. Behind him is an azure sky, and three cups stand on the grass, easily within his reach. A fairy hand offers a fourth cup—but he’s lost in his thoughts and doesn’t notice. This is how the Rider Waite Tarot deck depicts the Four of Cups.
Cups cards deal with emotions: feelings, love, relationships. They reflect heart-felt responses, as opposed to actions based on logic and reason. Of course, emotions have a negative side—too little or too much is rarely a good thing.
Fours are all about stability and steadiness.
These two ideas—emotions and stability—would seem to be at odds with each other, and this is the dynamic nature of the Four of Cups!
In the Rider Waite image, the meditating man is so tranquil and focused on the three cups that he fails to see what else is right before him: a gift or an unexpected opportunity. Because it’s a cup, it probably has to do with love—but alas, he’s oblivious to it.
When reversed or in a negative position relative to other cards, the Four of Cups may warn against wishful thinking, lack of gratitude, and taking your blessings for granted. It may also mean you’re suppressing your emotions and that you need to lighten up or take time to dream.
Either way, too much stability and too much focus on your own emotions are bad things. Have you become too self-absorbed? Are you lately a bit apathetic? If so, work on breaking free and on moving outside your own head. Don’t be afraid to give others a glimpse of your emotions, and don’t fear risks—especially emotional ones. Seek out new prospects, people, goals, and ideas.
And above all, be open to a new opportunity—especially one having to do with love. It may appear when and where you least expect it.

For the Ace of Pentacles, the Rider Waite Tarot deck shows a hand appearing from a cloud in the sky holding a large pentacle or oversized coin. Below the hand is a flourishing garden with a profusion of roses and lilies and a path leading towards mountains in the distance. The card’s overall ambiance is of abundance, fruition, and wealth.
The suit of pentacle relates to money, work, and material possessions. It can also stand for ego and self-esteem. Aces represent new beginnings and the genesis, potential, and the hope of the suit.
The Ace of Pentacles, then, suggests a new and prosperous beginning; it can indicate an unexpected change, such as a gift, bonus, prize, inheritance, or new friend. So the card is cause for optimism. The receiver is about to experience something new and positive, probably related to work or finances but sometimes related to self-confidence or ego. If you’re in a partnership, this card heralds a fresh start; if you’re single, it denotes enthusiasm as it encourages you to seek out new people.
This card means wealth, and not just in the financial sense. It tells you to look for and take advantage of new opportunities. It also cautions you to avoid ingratitude. Instead, be appreciative of the abundance in your life, feel blessed and deserving, and generate positive energy so you’ll receive the bounty that this card proclaims.
If success seems blocked or limited, suggested when this card is reversed, be advised to seek new and creative ways to achieve goals. Be sure to manage your resources wisely, avoiding overspending and excessive debt.
Overall, then, this cheerful minor arcana card tells you to be happy with what you have and be confident that more is coming your way. So realize life’s essential bounty and know that if you’re a good manager of your resources, abundance can appear where and when it’s least expected.

Today’s card, picked at random, is the Three of Wands. But what does it mean?
Standing on a cliff, a man in a red cloak looks out over calm waters where three ships are sailing; mountains rise beyond the sea in the distance. Surrounding the man are three wooden staffs firmly planted in the ground. This is the Three of Wands as shown in the Rider Waite Tarot deck.
Cards in the suit of wands relate to mental energy: ideas, inspiration, and spirituality; threes denote unity and are about taking a first step and getting results after solid planning and preparation. So the Three of Wands card is about enterprise and expansion, as well as preparation and foresight.
In the Rider Waite image, the man may be a merchant watching his own ships as they sail out to sea—or as they return to him laden with cargo. Similarly, this auspicious minor arcana card suggests that your plans are moving forward or will move forward successfully; things are going well or will go well because you’ve laid the groundwork.
This card also advises patience and tranquillity as you wait for your goals to be achieved and your plans to be fulfilled. It tells you to be willing to enter new and unexplored territories, and don’t be afraid to think big.
Just as a sailing ship may encounter a storm, know that no matter how carefully you’ve planned, unexpected challenges can appear. This may be the meaning when the card is reversed. Meet difficulties with a clear head, a calm demeanour, and a steady hand on the helm. Be willing to improvise. And just as the man on the cliff sees a broad horizon before him, don’t lose sight of the long term and the big picture.
This card may also suggest upcoming travel. So be an adventurer willing to step forward, but only after planning. Be courageous—but not reckless—as you expand your horizons and move bravely towards new lands.

The Rider Waite deck shows the head-on image of an armoured man standing under a star-studded canopy in a chariot drawn by a black sphinx and a white one.
At lucky number seven in the major arcana of the Tarot deck, the Chariot is a card of victory. Indeed, in some decks the card is called Victory.
This is a card of determination: of ambition, of getting things done, of proving you can win. But it may not be an easy success. Just as it takes physical and mental energy to manage the beasts that pull a racing chariot, this card recommends control, endurance, and strength of purpose to achieve a hard-won triumph.
Along the way, the black and white steeds might pull in different directions, leading to confusion, disunity, and indecision. There might be rough roads, unexpected detours, and traffic jams along the way. But when the animals are well-fed and well-trained, harnessed with the right equipment, and firmly controlled with discipline and self-confidence, few forces can block the chariot. It will charge full-speed ahead.
But be aware that this card is also a warning against being ruthless, unquestioningly loyal, and overly committed to winning regardless of the cost. This is especially true when it’s reversed. So don’t collapse under pressure or lose your direction. Be firm and committed, but not heartless and brutal. Know that winning isn’t everything and shouldn’t be the only thing.
This evocative and energetic major arcana card assures the possibility of success even against seemingly insurmountable odds. So have faith in your plans, your talent, and your convictions. Encourage partners and teammates to set aside their differences and work together. And overcome your own doubts. If you’re properly prepared, nothing that can stand in your way.
